What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
BJJ is a martial art and combat sport that teaches a smaller person how to defend himself/herself against a larger opponent utilizing leverage and technique. BJJ was created by combining aspects of Judo and traditional Japanese jujutsu.
Should I only take BJJ if I plan to compete?
BJJ is an effective form of self-defense. If you are pushed to the ground or someone is on top of you, BJJ teaches the skills to hold your attacker to minimize or avoid the damage they could do with punches, how to escape a hold or choke, and how to use leverage to get on top of your attacker so that you can get off the ground and get away. BJJ also teaches how to use leverage to take an attacker to the ground who is standing over you while you are on the ground. Competition BJJ is a fun and exciting sport, but not the only reason to learn BJJ.

Yes. There is a belt system in each, though they are vastly different. A Krav Maga Black Belt can be achieved in approximately 3 years or more. A BJJ Black Belt can take upwards of 10years to earn.
